Introduction: 

Good Morning Discovery Church. Today's sermon is called "Beware the Hidden Currents" In the sermon we are going to be looking at an interesting passage Hebrews 2:1. In it we are warned about spiritual drift and how to safe guard our faith in a drifting world. 

No summer is complete without a visit to the beach. How many people here like the beach? 

Imagine you're standing on a beautiful, sandy beach, enjoying the refreshing waves crashing against the shore. The water is inviting, and many people are swimming and splashing around. However, hidden beneath the surface, there lies a powerful undertow—a strong current that can quickly pull swimmers away from the safety of the shoreline.

Pause for a moment and reflect on the danger of an undertow. It is deceptive and can catch even the strongest swimmer off guard. Without paying attention and being aware of its presence, one can easily get swept away, carried further and further from the security of the beach.

Transition: In our spiritual journey, there are undertows that seek to pull us away from the truth and the safety of our faith. Just as the author of Hebrews warns against drifting away, we are reminded to pay attention to the great salvation we have received. Let us explore the reasons behind this call and the significance of remaining steadfast in the face of spiritual undertows.

I. The Call to Pay Attention

You might not be aware of this, but the Jewish recipients of this sermon were facing challenges in their faith. It is highly probable that they were under immense pressure from their Jewish counterparts to forsake their belief in Christ and return to their previous way of life and religious customs. The author recognized the importance of actively engaging with God's Word and teachings, especially in the face of opposition and doubts.

Things are not that different for us today. In our fast-paced world filled with distractions and competing voices, it is more critical than ever for us to actively listen and apply God's teachings in our lives.

For example, think about a time when you engaged in a conversation, but your mind was elsewhere. You nodded along, pretending to listen, but your thoughts were consumed by other concerns or you were thinking of what you were going to say next.

That's not active listening.

In our walk with Christ, passive hearing is not enough. We need to be engaged, attentive, and receptive to the truths of the Gospel.

Jesus' teaching stresses the significance of not only hearing His words but also acting upon them, illustrating the stability and security that come from active engagement with God's Word.

Active listening involves more than just hearing the words; it requires us to tune our hearts to the voice of God. When we approach God's Word with an open and surrendered heart, we position ourselves to receive His wisdom, guidance, and transformation. It is through attentive listening that we can discern His will and align our lives with His purposes.

So how can we practically pay attention to God's Word? Here are some ways we can cultivate an attitude of active listening:

Create a Sacred Space: Set aside a designated time and place for personal Bible study, prayer, and reflection. Find a quiet and peaceful environment where you can focus your attention on God's Word without distractions..

Engage with Scripture: As you read the Bible, approach it with a sense of expectancy and curiosity. Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate the truths you need to grasp. Take your time to reflect on the passages, asking questions and seeking understanding.

Meditate on God's Word: Don't rush through your reading but take moments to pause, reflect, and internalize what you have read. Meditate on key verses or passages, allowing them to penetrate your heart and transform your thinking.

Apply God's Teachings: The true value of God's Word lies in its application to our lives. As you study and reflect on Scripture, consider how its principles and teachings can be lived out in practical ways. Seek opportunities to apply God's truth to your thoughts, words, and actions..

Engage in Community: Actively participate in Bible studies, small groups, or discussions with fellow believers. Engage in conversations about God's Word, sharing insights, questions, and testimonies. Iron sharpens iron, and through communal interaction, we can deepen our understanding and encourage one another to live out God's Word.

If we don't listen to the word of God actively, we are like the swimmer who is ignoring the red flags warning them of the hidden strong undertow beneath the water. What will that undertow do? It will sweep them out to sea. That is why the author Hebrews speak next about...

II. The Danger of Drifting Away

So, why does the author of Hebrews warn against drifting away from our faith in Christ? There are various reasons that can lead us astray, and it is crucial for us to be aware of them. Let's explore some of these dangers:

1. Complacency: Complacency can gradually erode our commitment to Christ. When we become comfortable and settle into a stagnant spiritual routine, we may neglect pursuing a deeper relationship with God. The absence of intentional growth and a passion for God can lead to spiritual apathy and a loss of fervor.
2. Worldly Distractions: The world we live in bombards us with distractions that can pull us away from our faith. The allure of materialism, the pursuit of success, and the constant noise of entertainment can divert our attention from God. If we allow worldly pursuits to take precedence over our spiritual lives, we risk losing sight of our true purpose and identity in Christ.
3. Doubts and Deceptions: Doubts and deceptions can undermine our faith if left unaddressed. When faced with challenges, uncertainties, or intellectual objections, we may question the truth of God's Word or the reliability of His promises. If we do not confront and seek answers to our doubts, they can gradually erode our confidence and lead us away from the solid foundation of our faith.

The message here is clear: Once we have come to know the truth and have experienced the transforming power of Jesus Christ in our lives, we must guard against the temptation to return to a life of sin. We must not allow ourselves to be entangled once again in the defilements of the world.

The image of a boat adrift in the ocean vividly portrays the dangers of drifting away. Just as a boat without an anchor is at the mercy of the currents, a believer who neglects to stay connected to God's Word and His community is susceptible to drifting away from the truth.

The consequences of drifting away from God are significant. We risk losing the intimacy of our relationship with Him, the joy of His presence, and the peace that surpasses understanding. Furthermore, drifting can rob us of the assurance of salvation and the hope of eternity in His presence.

To guard against drifting away, we must be vigilant and intentional in our faith:

1. Stay Connected to God's Word: Regularly engage with the Scriptures, allowing them to guide and shape our lives. The Word of God is our anchor, providing direction, wisdom, and nourishment for our souls.
2. Foster Spiritual Community: Surround ourselves with fellow believers who can support and encourage us in our faith. Engage in meaningful relationships, participate in worship and fellowship, and seek accountability. Together, we can help one another stay anchored in Christ.
3. Address and Seek Answers to Doubts: When doubts arise, we should not ignore or suppress them. Instead, we must confront them honestly, seeking answers through prayer, study, and engaging with mature believers or trusted mentors who can provide guidance and insight.

In doing so, we can experience the fullness of life in Christ, holding fast to the truth that sets us free.

I want to leave you with a powerful story from the movie "The Shawshank Redemption." It's a story that beautifully captures the essence of staying steadfast in the midst of adversity and spiritual drift.

In the film, we follow the journey of Andy Dufresne, a man wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary. Despite the harsh and hopeless environment, Andy never loses sight of his ultimate goal: freedom.

It is a powerful moment that encapsulates the triumph of the human spirit and the reward of staying steadfast in the face of adversity.

Brothers and sisters, just like Andy Dufresne, we too face challenges and temptations that can pull us away from the truth and safety of our faith. But let us remember that there is always hope. Let us be inspired by Andy's example to persevere, to never lose sight of our ultimate goal: a deep and unshakable relationship with our Savior.

As we navigate the currents of life, let us remain anchored in Christ, diligently guarding our faith, and staying steadfast in our commitment to Him. Just as Andy's story reminds us that freedom is worth fighting for, so too is our faith in Christ worth protecting.
