Compassion: Reflecting the Heart of Christ

Compassion: Reflecting the Heart of Christ

Saturday, September 16, 2023

Intro: Good morning Discovery Church. Last week we began a thrilling adventure to discover Jesus as the Ultimate Friend. We've learned about His invitation to friendship and His unique ability to change our lives. Today, we venture even further into this exploration of Jesus as our Friend.

As we dive into today's message, "The Compassionate Friend," let me ask you this: Have you ever experienced a friendship that left you in awe? A friendship that touched your soul and reshaped your perspective? Well, get ready, because we're about to explore the most extraordinary friendship of all time – our friendship with Jesus, the Compassionate Friend.

Today, we'll journey into the depths of Jesus' compassion and His willingness to be a Friend to the hurting and brokenhearted. Our anchor for this voyage is Matthew 9:36, which reveals a side of Jesus that will leave you speechless. So, buckle up and open your hearts; it's going to be an incredible ride!

Let's go ahead and open up our bibles to Matthew 9:36.

Matthew 9:36 "But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd."

Notice that the verse tells us that Jesus was moved with compassion because the people we "weary and scattered like sheep without a shepherd."

Compassion, my friends, is at the very heart of who Christ is. It's not just a feeling but a defining trait of His character.

1. Compassion as Christ's Defining Trait

Let me illustrate this with a story. Have you ever watched the movie "Schindler's List"? It's a powerful depiction of Oskar Schindler, a businessman driven by profit who, through compassion, transformed into a compassionate friend who saved hundreds of lives during the Holocaust. Picture this: Oskar, at great personal cost, making a list of names, not for profit, but for salvation. It's a picture of Christ's love in action.

Colossians 3:12 " Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;"

Colossians 3:12 reminds us of our identity as God's chosen people, inviting us to clothe ourselves with qualities that mirror the character of Christ. Just as Christ exemplified compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience throughout His earthly ministry, this verse calls us to emulate these virtues in our own lives. It's an invitation to be transformed into Christlikeness, where our actions and attitudes reflect His heart of love and compassion. When we embody these qualities, we not only honor God but also become instruments of His grace, bringing hope and healing to a broken world. Colossians 3:12 serves as a blueprint for Christian living, reminding us that our lives should radiate the very essence of Christ's character to those around us.

Transition: Now, as we move forward, let's consider the hurting and brokenhearted among us.

2. The Hurting and Brokenhearted in Our Midst

There are hurting and brokenhearted people all around us today, just as there were in Jesus' time. These individuals often feel like they are "harassed, wearied and helpless."

Our God is a God of compassion.

Psalm 34:18 "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit."

Psalm 34:18 beautifully encapsulates the heart of our compassionate God. It tells us that when we encounter the brokenhearted, those who feel crushed by the weight of life's trials, God draws near to them. It's a profound picture of His intimate involvement in our pain and suffering, a reminder that He is not a distant observer but a loving Father who cares deeply for His children. As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate this divine pattern of compassion—to draw near to those who are hurting, to listen to their stories, and to share in their burdens. Just as God doesn't shy away from our brokenness, we, too, are called to enter into the lives of others, offering comfort, solace, and the tangible presence of Christ. In doing so, we mirror God's love and fulfill the greatest commandment—to love our neighbor as ourselves.

Transition: Now, let's discuss the importance of befriending the hurting.

3. Befriending the Hurting

Friends, friendship is a powerful and biblical concept. Scripture teaches us that "as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another" (Proverbs 27:17). We're not meant to walk this journey alone.

Think about legendary coaches like Vince Lombardi or John Wooden. They weren't just coaches; they were compassionate friends to their players. Imagine the countless hours spent in locker rooms, on fields, and in the quiet moments where their relationships transformed lives.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 "Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor.10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up."

These verses underscores the profound truth that life is not meant to be lived in isolation. It speaks directly to the importance of relationships and community, especially when facing life's trials. Just as a companion can offer support and assistance when we stumble or face difficulties, so too are we called to be companions to those who are hurting. The hurting and brokenhearted often feel as if they have fallen, and our role as compassionate friends is to extend a helping hand, to lift them up with our presence, our empathy, and our willingness to journey alongside them. In this way, Ecclesiastes reminds us that friendship and community are essential tools for bringing comfort, healing, and restoration to those who are hurting.

Transition: Lastly, we'll explore the transformative impact of compassion.

4.  Compassion's Transformative Impact

Compassion is not just a nice sentiment; it's a force for change. It has the power to transform lives.

Consider the movie "Pay It Forward." It's a beautiful portrayal of how one act of compassion can set off a chain reaction of kindness and transformation. Picture a young boy, Trevor, who decides to change the world by doing good deeds for others without expecting anything in return. His simple act of compassion sparks a revolution of love.

Paul shares a similar idea in Galatians 6:2.

Galatians 6:2 "Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."

By carrying each other's burdens, we fulfill this law of Christ. Our actions align with His heart, mirroring His compassion for the hurting and brokenhearted. When we selflessly enter into the challenges and difficulties of others, we become living testimonies of Christ's love. It's through our compassionate actions that the world sees the transformative power of the Gospel and the reality of Christ in our lives.

Galatians 6:2 serves as a powerful reminder that compassion is not an optional virtue but an essential component of Christian living. It's a call to be actively engaged in one another's lives, to share the load of each other's trials and tribulations, and, in doing so, to fulfill the law of Christ—the law of love. It's a profound invitation to embrace the essence of Christlike compassion and live it out in our daily walk with Him and with one another.

Challenge:

Now, as we've journeyed through this message, we've discovered the profound impact of compassion in our lives and the lives of others. We've seen how a single act of kindness, inspired by the heart of Christ, can set off a chain reaction of love and transformation. But here's the thing, church family; this message isn't just about understanding compassion; it's about living it.

So, here's my challenge to each and every one of us today, myself included. It's a challenge that goes beyond these walls, beyond this sermon, and into the very fabric of our daily lives. Are you ready for it?

I challenge you, starting today, to consciously seek out opportunities to practice compassion. Be on the lookout for those who are hurting, oppressed, or in need. Whether it's a neighbor struggling with illness, a coworker facing difficulties, or a stranger you meet along the way, let's actively extend compassion to them. Remember, compassion isn't about grand gestures alone; it's about the everyday acts of love, kindness, and support that reflect Christ's heart.

As we take on this challenge, remember the words of Galatians 6:2, 'Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.' Each act of compassion carries the potential to transform lives, including your own. It's not just a duty; it's a privilege and an opportunity to be Christ's hands and feet in a broken world.

I invite you to accept this challenge today, right where you are. Commit to making compassion a way of life, both within our church community and beyond. Imagine the impact we can have collectively as we embody Christ's love and compassion. Together, we can be a beacon of hope in a world that so desperately needs it.

Let's step into this challenge with faith, knowing that God equips us, empowers us, and transforms us through the journey of compassion. May our lives be a testimony to the boundless love of our Savior, and may we, as a church family, reflect His heart to a hurting world. Are you up for the challenge, church?"

Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father, as we stand at the threshold of this new journey of compassion, we come before You with open hearts. We are humbled by the profound truth that Your Son, Jesus Christ, embodied compassion to the fullest, and today, we've been reminded of His call to us to do the same. Lord, we accept this challenge, knowing that it's not by our strength alone but by the power of Your Spirit that we can walk this path. We ask for Your guidance, wisdom, and courage as we step out in faith, seeking opportunities to be compassionate friends to the hurting and brokenhearted. May our lives be a reflection of Your love, grace, and mercy. May our church community shine as a beacon of hope in our world. And may the transformation we long to see begin within us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
