Embracing God's Perspective in the Midst of Challenges

Embracing God's Perspective in the Midst of Challenges

Saturday, August 19, 2023

Intro: Good Morning Discovery Church. We are finishing up our series today in the book of Number called "Wildness Lessons." Over the past couple of weeks, we have looked at the nation of Israel, its journey from Egypt to the Promise Land. We have learned about the presence of God and how he wants to be in our lives leading and guiding us. We have learned about the consequences of complaining and how to have victory over it. We have even learned from Moses what not to do as a parent raising kids.

Today, I want to acknowledge a universal challenge that each one of us has encountered at some point in our lives. Picture this: you're sitting in your office, facing a decision that could shape the trajectory of your career. The pressure is mounting, and doubts are creeping in. Should you take that new job opportunity? Or stick with what's familiar? It's as if you're standing at a crossroads, with one path leading to the unknown and the other to the comfort of the familiar. In these moments, we all face our own 'giants' of uncertainty and fear, just like the Israelites. It might be a career transition, a strained relationship, a health concern, or a financial struggle. Whatever it is, we've all been there – that place where challenges loom large, doubts whisper loudly, and the future seems uncertain.

In those moments, we can't help but wonder, "How do I navigate this?" It's like standing at the edge of a cliff, gazing into the unknown below. The view can be daunting, intimidating, even overwhelming. But my friends, as we delve into God's Word today, I want to remind you that perspective is the key. How we view those challenges determines how we navigate them. Just as the scene changes when we shift our gaze from the edge of the cliff to the horizon beyond, our perspective can transform our response to life's challenges.

Today, we're going to journey through Numbers 13:30-33, exploring the story of the spies in the Promised Land. In their journey, we'll uncover timeless truths about the power of perspective – truths that are as relevant to us today as they were to the Israelites then. So, let's dive in and discover how we can embrace God's perspective in the face of life's challenges.

Number 13:30-33 " Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” 32 And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”

Transition: The first step to shifting our perspective is...

1. Choosing Faith over Fear

Our journey into the power of perspective starts with a man named Caleb. He was one of the spies chosen to scout the Promised Land, a land flowing with milk and honey. Yet, when they returned, most of the spies painted a grim picture. They saw giants – descendants of Anak – living there, along with fortified cities. Fear spread like wildfire among the Israelites. But not in Caleb's heart.

Picture the scene: the Israelites murmuring, doubt hanging heavy in the air. And then, in the midst of it all, stands Caleb. His voice breaks through the fear, and he declares, "Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it." Can you feel the strength of Caleb's faith in those words? His eyes weren't just on the giants; they were fixed on a God who was much bigger than any giant.

Action Step: Now, let's apply this to our lives. What's your "giant"? It could be a financial challenge, a health struggle, a strained relationship, or a daunting decision. We all have them. But here's the challenge: acknowledge it, yes, but then choose faith over fear. Look at your "giant" through the lens of God's promises. Remember that the God who parted the Red Sea, who brought down the walls of Jericho, who raised Christ from the dead – that God is on your side. The giants might be big, but your God is bigger.

Think about it this way: David didn't see Goliath as undefeatable; he saw him as uncircumcised. In other words, Goliath wasn't in a covenant relationship with God, but David was. And that made all the difference. The same applies to us. We are in a covenant relationship with the Almighty God. The giants may be imposing, but we have a God who can turn our weaknesses into strengths, our obstacles into opportunities.

Caleb's faith silenced the fear of the people. His perspective shifted their outlook. Your faith can do the same. So, let's stand where Caleb stood – silencing doubt and embracing faith. It's not about denying the reality of challenges; it's about seeing challenges in light of God's promises. When fear whispers in your ear, answer with faith. When doubt knocks at your door, let faith open it. Choose faith, my friends. Choose faith, and watch your perspective change.

Transition: The second step to shifting our perspective is...

2. Seeing Giants as Opportunities

Now, let's dig deeper into our exploration of the power of perspective, using the story of the spies in Numbers 13:31-33 as our guide. As the spies returned from their mission, their reports revealed a stark contrast in their perceptions of the Promised Land. The giants dwelling there were like imposing sentinels guarding the territory, and their presence stirred fear in the hearts of the Israelites. Yet, this narrative holds a profound lesson – a lesson about seeing giants as opportunities.

Imagine those giants for a moment. They were the embodiment of what seemed insurmountable. They represented challenges that towered above human capabilities. It's here that our perspective shifts from the giants themselves to the God who had been leading the Israelites all along. As we delve into this, let's bring our perspective into focus through the lens of Scripture.

Action Step: As we reflect on our own lives, think back to the moments when challenges felt insurmountable, doubts were persistent, and you felt like a grasshopper among giants. We've all had those moments. But in the midst of these moments, we have a choice – to focus on our limited perspective or to trust in God's perspective, which sees beyond our immediate circumstances.

Consider the story of David facing Goliath. David, a shepherd boy, faced a giant warrior who seemed unbeatable. From a human perspective, it was a mismatch. But David's perspective was different. He saw Goliath not as an unbeatable giant, but as an opportunity for God to display His power.

David declared....

1 Samuel 17:45 "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts..."

This perspective, my friends, is a game-changer. It's the lens through which we can view our own giants – those challenges that seem insurmountable. Just as David saw Goliath as an opportunity for God's glory, we too can see our giants as opportunities for God to work wonders.

Reflect on Joseph's journey. Sold into slavery by his own brothers, he faced challenges that could have crushed his spirit. Yet, in the midst of those challenges, Joseph held onto a perspective that saw beyond his present circumstances. He declared to his brothers...

Genesis 50:20 "But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive."

It's a perspective that echoes the words of Paul.

Romans 8:28 "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."

This truth teaches us that even the giants we face can become platforms for God's purpose. They can become opportunities for growth, for God's power to shine through our weaknesses, and for His glory to be revealed.

So, as you confront your giants, don't just see obstacles; envision opportunities. The giants may be imposing, but remember, you have a God who specializes in the impossible. Your giants – those challenges that seem insurmountable – they are your canvas, and God is the Master Artist. He can turn what seems like chaos into a masterpiece of His grace. Who would David be without Goliath? Would he have been one of Israel's greatest kings? I don't think so. What about Joseph? Would he have been able to rise to power in Egypt to save his family without his brothers and his own giants? Probably not.

Caleb and Joshua saw beyond the giants, and it transformed their perspective. They understood that God's strength is magnified in the face of adversity. And the same holds true for us. Your giants – those challenges that loom large – they are opportunities for God to display His power. So, as you face your giants, remember – they're not just obstacles; they're opportunities for God's glory to shine through.

Transition: The final step to shifting our perspective is...

3. Focusing on God's Promised Outcome

When we look at the story in Numbers, we see a striking contrast in the reports brought back by the spies. While some described the land as devouring its inhabitants and saw themselves as grasshoppers, others, like Caleb and Joshua, fixed their gaze on God's promised outcome. This contrast holds a powerful lesson about focusing on God's perspective rather than our own limited view.

Imagine the scene: two sets of reports, two interpretations of the same reality. The majority saw giants that made them feel small and powerless. But Caleb and Joshua saw beyond the giants. They recognized that the challenges they faced were mere instruments in the hands of a God who orchestrates every detail of His plan.

Action Step: Now, let's bring this truth into our lives. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where challenges seemed overwhelming, doubts crept in, and you felt like a grasshopper in a land of giants? We all have. But in those moments, we're given a choice – to focus on our limited perspective or to trust in God's promised outcome.

That's where Romans 8:28 becomes our guiding light: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him..." What a promise! It's like having a divine GPS that recalculates our route, even when we've taken a wrong turn. God takes every circumstance, every challenge, and weaves them into His grand tapestry of purpose.

Now, picture your own story. That challenge you're facing? That obstacle that seems insurmountable? It's not the end of the story. It's a chapter, a chapter that God is using to shape and mold you. Just as a potter shapes clay on a wheel, God is shaping your life into something beautiful.

We often view our lives as snapshots, focusing on the present moment. But God sees the entire timeline – from the beginning to the end. He sees how each challenge fits into His greater narrative. He sees the threads that weave your story together, creating a tapestry of His glory.

So, here's your action step: Memorize Romans 8:28. Plant it deep within your heart. When doubt knocks, when challenges seem overwhelming, when you're tempted to lose perspective, let this promise be your anchor. Trust that God, the Master Weaver, is at work, creating a masterpiece out of the seemingly chaotic threads of your life.

Conclusion: My friends, today, I invite you to stand alongside Caleb, silencing doubt and embracing faith. By choosing faith over fear, by viewing giants as opportunities, and by focusing on God's promised outcome, we reshape our perspective on challenges. As we do, we step into God's promises with unwavering confidence. Remember, His perspective transforms every challenge into an opportunity for His glory. Embrace His view, and your challenges will become stepping stones toward the Promised Land God has prepared for you.

Now, in the quietness of your heart, take a moment to respond. If you're ready to choose faith over fear, opportunities over obstacles, and God's perspective over your own, I want to pray with you. If you're in this place and you're saying, 'Yes, I'm making that commitment today,' would you simply raise your hand as an expression of your response?

Thank you. Hands all across this room.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you see these hands, and you know the hearts behind them. We thank You for the power of Your Word that transforms our perspective and empowers us to face our giants with unwavering faith. I pray that you would infuse us with your courage, your vision, and your unwavering trust. May we walk out of this place today, not just inspired, but ready to conquer challenges in Your strength. In Jesus' mighty name, we pray. Amen
