Jesus: The Friend Who Never Leaves

Intro: Good morning church. Today we are going to look at promise that truly has the power to transform our lives. This promise is found in

Hebrews 13:8 "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."

In a world marked by change, uncertainty, and fleeting friendships, we find our anchor in the unwavering faithfulness of our Savior.

Allow me to begin with a story that many of us can relate to—a story of friendship. Picture this: two children, inseparable companions, sharing laughter, dreams, and secrets. Their friendship, like many childhood bonds, seemed unbreakable. But as years passed, circumstances shifted, and life took them down different paths. The closeness they once shared slowly faded away, leaving behind a sense of loss and longing.

This story, while relatable, often mirrors our experiences with earthly friendships. We've known the heartache of friends who come and go, relationships that change with the seasons, and the ache of feeling left behind. But today, I bring you good news—a timeless truth that transcends all earthly changes.

Our anchor for today's exploration is found in Hebrews 13:8, where we read, 'Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.' This single verse encapsulates the unwavering faithfulness of our Savior—a faithfulness that extends throughout time itself.

With this foundation laid, we'll delve into three key aspects of Jesus' friendship: the loneliness of abandonment, Jesus as the eternal friend, and how we can embrace His friendship in our lives. So, fasten your spiritual seatbelts, church, as we embark on this transformative journey together

1. The Loneliness of Abandonment

Imagine the feeling of being left behind, the isolation that comes with abandonment. It's a pain that cuts deep, isn't it? Now, think of Joseph in the book of Genesis. His own brothers stripped him of his coat of many colors, threw him into a pit, and left him there to fend for himself.

Picture young Joseph in that pit, far from home, betrayed by his flesh and blood. It's a lonely place—a place where despair can easily take hold. We've all felt like Joseph at some point, abandoned and betrayed.

This abandonment, this pit, it's not just a physical place; it's a symbol of the pits we find ourselves in—emotional, spiritual, or relational pits. These are the moments when we wonder if anyone truly cares, if anyone is there to help us out.

Genesis 37:23-24 "So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him. 24 Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it."

Joseph's story is a vivid reminder of the loneliness that can come from being forsaken, even by those we trust.

But here's the beauty, beloved congregation. In those moments of abandonment, when we feel like we're in a pit with no way out, Jesus is there. Just as Joseph's story doesn't end in the pit, neither do our stories. We have a friend who never leaves.

Think about a lifeguard at the beach. When someone is caught in a rip current, struggling to stay afloat, the lifeguard doesn't abandon them. They dive in, risking their own safety, to rescue the one in need. In the same way, Jesus dives into our pits of loneliness to rescue us.

As we journey through this sermon, remember this: no matter how deep the pit, no matter how great the abandonment, Jesus is the friend who never leaves.

Hebrews 13:5 "...I will never leave you nor forsake you."

His faithfulness surpasses our deepest pains. Let's explore further how His unwavering presence transforms our lives.

2. Jesus: The Eternal Friend

Now, let's dive into the heart of our message: Jesus, the eternal friend. Picture this—a boat on the stormy Sea of Galilee in Mark 4. The disciples were terrified, but Jesus was right there with them, calming the tempest.

Imagine the disciples' fear as the waves crashed against the boat, threatening to engulf them. In that moment of turmoil, they turned to Jesus, waking Him with desperate cries for help. What happened next is a testament to His unwavering friendship.

In Mark 4:35-41, we witness this incredible story. The disciples, in the midst of a ferocious storm, awakened Jesus, and He stood up. With a voice that commanded both the winds and the waves, He said, 'Quiet! Be still!' And suddenly, the wind died down, and the sea became as calm as a summer's day.

Now, you might think, 'That's a great story, but what does it have to do with me?' Well, friends, it has everything to do with us. Just as Jesus never left the disciples amidst the storm, He never leaves us, even in the fiercest tempests of life. His faithfulness endures.

Imagine, for a moment, your own life as a boat navigating the unpredictable waters of this world. There will be storms, challenges, and moments of uncertainty. But in those moments, remember that Jesus is right there with you, the eternal friend who calms the storms of your soul.

As we reflect on Jesus, the eternal friend who calms the storms and remains with us through life's tempests, let's continue to explore how His faithfulness impacts our journey of faith.

3. Embracing Jesus' Friendship

As we seek to embrace Jesus' friendship, let's consider the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15. The son wandered far from home but found himself embraced by his loving father upon his return.

Picture the prodigal son—a young man who squandered his inheritance, living recklessly, and ending up in the depths of despair. He realized his mistake, humbled himself, and began the journey back home

In Luke 15:20, we find this beautiful story.

Luke 15:20 "And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him."

This parable illustrates the essence of Jesus' friendship.

Now, think about your own life's journey. Perhaps you've made mistakes, taken wrong turns, or felt far from God. But here's the incredible truth—just as the father in the parable embraced his wayward son, Jesus embraces us when we turn to Him. He eagerly waits for our return, ready to welcome us with open arms.

So, how can we embrace Jesus' friendship in return? It begins with humility, acknowledging our need for Him. Just as the prodigal son admitted his mistakes, we too can come to Jesus, confessing our shortcomings and seeking His forgiveness.

Psalm 32:5 "I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah"

As we've explored the prodigal son's return and the open arms of Jesus, we've witnessed the beauty of embracing His friendship. Now, let's continue our journey, discovering practical ways to deepen our connection with our eternal friend, Jesus.

Practical Application:

Here's the practical application, church. First, spend time in His presence daily through prayer and Scripture. Just as friends communicate, we commune with Jesus. Secondly, be a faithful friend to others, reflecting His unwavering love.

In a world of shifting tides and broken promises, we have a friend whose faithfulness shines as a guiding light. As we close today, remember that Jesus is the friend who never leaves.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we have explored the profound truth that Jesus is the friend who never leaves. From Joseph's pit to the stormy seas and the prodigal son's return, we see His unwavering presence throughout Scripture. As we go forth today, may we draw nearer to Him, cherishing the enduring friendship of our Savior. In a world of change, Jesus remains constant, our forever friend.

Invitation/Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude. We thank You for revealing Yourself as the friend who never leaves us. Your faithfulness, O Lord, surpasses all understanding. As we close our time together today, we extend an invitation to those who may not yet have embraced Jesus as their eternal friend.

If you're here today, and you've felt the loneliness of abandonment, the storms of life, or the distance from God, know that Jesus stands ready to be your friend who never leaves. If you'd like to receive Him into your life, simply pray in your heart right now, saying, 'Jesus, I welcome You as my eternal friend. Come into my life, forgive my sins, and walk with me through every season."

Lord, for those who have prayed this prayer, we ask that You wrap them in Your unending love and faithfulness. And for all of us, may we go forth from this place, rooted in the assurance that You, Jesus, are the same yesterday, today, and forever. In Your faithful name, we pray. Amen.
