Acts 4:23–30 "And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 25 who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: ‘Why did the nations rage,And the people plot vain things? 26 The kings of the earth took their stand,And the rulers were gathered togetherAgainst the Lord and against His Christ.’ 27 “For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. 29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”
Introduction
Good morning, everybody! I’m so glad you’re here today. Whether you’ve been part of church your entire life or you’re just checking it out, you’re in the right place. Today, we’re looking at a powerful prayer from the early church in Acts 4:29:
“Lord, . . . grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word.”
Notice something incredible about this prayer: instead of asking God to remove the hardships they faced, the early Christians asked for boldness. They wanted courage to share the good news of Jesus, no matter what was happening around them. And that’s exactly the kind of faith we need in our lives—fearless, unshakable faith.
Maybe you came in today feeling overwhelmed. Or perhaps you’re ready to go deeper in your walk with God. Here’s our key phrase for this morning:
“When we place our faith in God’s grace, providence, Word, and Spirit, we become unstoppable for His purposes.”
This morning, I want to highlight four areas where you can confidently trust God. These four truths will help us become a church that lives out its faith boldly in a world that desperately needs hope.
I. You Can Trust God’s Grace
Ephesians 2:8–9 (NKJV)“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
1. God’s Grace Saves You
- Let’s do a little Key Word check: Grace is God’s undeserved kindness—it’s His gift, given freely, and you can’t earn it.
- Whenever you hear “grace,” think of the word “gift.” It means salvation isn’t a self-improvement project; it’s a divine rescue.
Illustration: Picture someone drowning in a riptide, waving for help. They can’t swim out on their own. A lifeguard jumps in to save them. In the same way, we’re spiritually helpless without Jesus, but God’s grace steps in and rescues us.
2. God’s Grace Shows You Who You Are
- Once you’re saved by grace, you become part of God’s family.
- Galatians 4:6–7 says you’re no longer a slave but a child of God, an heir of all His promises.
Application:
- Maybe you walked in here wondering, “Am I good enough? Do I matter?” In Christ, the answer is a resounding “YES.” You are chosen, loved, forgiven, and set free.
- Remind yourself each day: “I am who God says I am: His child.”
Transition: So the first foundation for our faith life is God’s grace. Next, we’ll see that we can also trust God’s guiding hand in every situation—His providence.
II. You Can Trust God’s Providence
Romans 8:28 (NKJV)“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
Providence means God is in control—He’s at work behind the scenes, orchestrating events for His ultimate plan.
1. God Has a Purpose for Everything
- Isaiah 46:9–10 teaches us that God declares “the end from the beginning.”
- Nothing catches God off-guard. He weaves every circumstance into His bigger story.
2. God Will Meet Your Needs.
- Philippians 4:19 (NKJV) promises, “My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
Think about George Müller, who ran orphanages just by praying and trusting God to provide. Over and over, food and resources showed up exactly when they were needed—no shortage, no delay.Application:If you’re weighed down by financial issues, health concerns, or family troubles, give those worries to God.Remember: God has never failed you in the past, and He’s not about to start now.
Transition: We can trust God’s grace to save us and shape our identity. We can trust God’s providence to direct our steps and meet our needs. Now let’s explore God’s Word, which is our ultimate guide for living a life of purpose.
III. You Can Trust God’s Word
2 Timothy 3:16–17 (NKJV)“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God . . . that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
1. God Reveals Himself Through Scripture
- “Inspiration” means the Holy Spirit guided the Bible’s authors to record exactly what God wanted to communicate.
- The same God who spoke the universe into being also spoke truth into these pages—because He wants you to know Him.
2. God Promises His Word Will Not Fail
- Isaiah 55:11 (NKJV) says God’s Word won’t return void; it will accomplish what He pleases.
- When we read, teach, or share Scripture, God uses those words to change lives.
3. God’s Word Has Life-Changing Power
- Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV) calls it “living and powerful,” able to pierce our hearts.
- Illustration: Think of the Bible like a seed. You plant it in your heart, and over time, it grows into spiritual fruit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Application:
- Make it a habit to read Scripture daily, even if it’s just a few verses. Ask God to speak to you each time.
- Trust that God’s Word has the answer for whatever you’re facing—whether it’s a relationship struggle, a tough decision, or a crisis of faith.
Transition: Finally, we come to our fourth reason we can live with unshakable faith: God’s Spirit. Let’s see how trusting His Spirit empowers us every single day.
V. You Can Trust God’s Spirit
Acts 1:8 (NKJV)“You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me.”
1. The Holy Spirit Lives in You
- Ephesians 3:17 talks about Christ dwelling in our hearts by faith. The Holy Spirit makes that presence real, guiding you from the inside out.
- You don’t have to do life alone—God is with you every step of the way.
2. The Holy Spirit Renews You
- Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV) reminds us that when we wait on the Lord, He renews our strength.
- Ever feel spiritually drained? The Holy Spirit is like a fresh wind that revives your soul.
3. The Holy Spirit Empowers You
- John 4:14 (NKJV) pictures the Spirit as a fountain of water springing up into eternal life. He’s your never-ending supply.
- Illustration: If you’ve ever seen a lamp unplugged, it’s pretty useless. But once you connect it to the power source, light floods the room. In the same way, when you depend on the Holy Spirit, your life shines the light of Christ to those around you.
Application: Each morning, pray something like: “Holy Spirit, guide me, fill me, and use me for Your purpose today.” Let Him shape your decisions, your reactions, and your interactions with others.
Summary: Four Ways to Build a Bold Faith Life
So how do we develop the church’s faith life—the kind of unstoppable, purposeful faith we see in Acts?
- Trust God’s Grace – He rescues and redefines who you are.
- Trust God’s Providence – He’s working behind the scenes and will meet your needs.
- Trust God’s Word – His truth transforms and guides you.
- Trust God’s Spirit – He empowers, renews, and stays with you always.
Friends, “When we place our faith in God’s grace, providence, Word, and Spirit, we become unstoppable for His purposes.”
Sharing the Gospel
Maybe today you realize you’ve never personally embraced this God who offers grace. Let me tell you the best news ever:
- John 3:16 (NKJV) says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
- Jesus came to earth, died on the cross for your sins, and rose again, so you could have a new life and a personal relationship with God.
Invitation:
- If you haven’t accepted Jesus yet, it’s as simple as saying, “God, I admit I need You. I believe Jesus died and rose for me. Today, I surrender my life to You.”
- Once you do, you become part of God’s family, and He begins changing you from the inside out.
Conclusion: Step Out in Faith
Friends, the early church prayed for boldness—and they received it because they rested on these four foundations. Today, we can do the same. Ask God for fearless faith that won’t back down:
- Reflect: Which of these four truths—Grace, Providence, the Word, or the Spirit—do you most need to trust right now?
- Pray for Boldness: Say, “Lord, make me bold. Use me to share Your hope with my friends, my neighbors, and my community.”
- Act on What You Believe: Maybe sign up for a ministry, help a neighbor, or step out in generosity because you trust God to provide.
As we close, remember: God is for you, so don’t be afraid. When our church is united in faith—living by God’s grace, trusting His providence, anchored in His Word, and empowered by His Spirit—we can’t help but make a difference in the world.
Let’s pray together.
“Father, thank You for Your amazing grace that saves us, for Your providence that guides us, for Your Word that shapes us, and for Your Spirit who empowers us. We ask You to give us boldness, just like the early believers prayed in Acts 4, so that we can speak Your Word fearlessly in our families, workplaces, and communities. For those here who don’t yet know You, I pray they’ll open their hearts to Jesus and receive the gift of salvation today. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
